Life Cycle Analysis – a tool to study environmental impacts
LCA studies cover various impacts that a product has on the environment – land, water, air, plant, animal and human health.
It usually commences with defining the scope of the study and the boundaries which can vary from Cradle to Gate, Cradle to Grave and Cradle to Cradle.
The measure covers all raw material inputs, inward freight, processes, outputs, outward freight and further usage and disposal. Once these parameters are measured, weightages based on their impacts are given by a base inventory data which is then fed into a calculation mechanism to arrive at a single number – normally given as CO2 equivalent.
The tool is currently being used to assess the carbon footprint of some of our key products.
